Our Lady of Victory School Wellness, Physical Activity, and Nutrition Guidelines (rev. October, 2009)


Children need access to healthful foods and opportunities to be physically active in order to grow, learn, and thrive


Good health fosters student attendance and education.


Community participation is essential to the development and implementation of successful school wellness policies.

Thus, Our Lady of Victory School is committed to providing a school environment that promotes and protects children’s health, well-being, and ability to learn by supporting healthy eating and physical activity.  Therefore, it is the policy of Our Lady of Victory School that:



The school will engage students, parents, teachers, food service professionals, health professionals, and other interested community members in developing, implementing, monitoring, and reviewing our nutrition and physical activities.

Physically Active

All students in grades Preschool thru Grade 6 will have opportunities, support, and encouragement to be physically active on a regular basis.



Foods and beverages sold or served at school will meet the nutrition recommendations of the U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans.


Our Lady of Victory School will participate in the School Breakfast Program and the National School Lunch Program and encourage student participation.


To Achieve These Policy Goals:

School Health

Our Lady of Victory School will work to develop, implement, monitor, review, and as necessary revise our school nutrition and physical activity procedures.  Those involved with this process will include school administrator, teachers, students, parents, head cook, school nurse, and Board of Education members.

Meals served through the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs will:

  • be appealing and attractive to children;

  • be served in clean and pleasant settings;

  • meet, at a minimum, nutrition requirements established by local, state, and federal statutes and regulations.

Free and
Reduced-priced Meals

OLV School will prevent the overt identification of students who are eligible for free and reduced-priced meals.

Nutritional Quality of Foods and Beverages Served

Meal Times and Scheduling

​OLV School will:

  • schedule meal periods at appropriate times – lunch should be scheduled between 11:00 A.M. and 1:00 P.M.

  • provide students access to hand washing or hand sanitizing before they eat meals or snacks.

Sharing of Foods and Beverages

​OLV School will discourage students from sharing their foods or beverages with one another during meal or snack time given concerns about allergies and other restrictions on some children’s diets.

OLV School will provide opportunities for staff development programs to include appropriate certification and/or training for school cafeteria managers, and cafeteria workers, according to their levels of responsibility.

Qualifications of School Food Service Staff

Classroom Snacks

Pop should not be used as a beverage for a classroom party.  Candy will not be used as a reward for academic achievement during the instructional day.

Daily Recess

All elementary school students (K-4) will have at least 20 minutes a day of supervised recess, preferably outdoors, during which students will be encouraged both verbally and through the provision of space and equipment to participate in moderate to vigorous physical activity.

Our Lady of Victory School should limit celebrations that involve food during the school day to no more than one party per class per month.  Each party should include no more than one food or beverage that contains sugar as its first ingredient.  Teachers will send home notes to parents informing them of this snack requirement.
